Inexperience will be a key factor this year for the Greenville High School girls’ team, which lost four starters from a year ago.

Head coach Ronald Boggan said that his team has a lot of upperclassmen, but not many of them have basketball experience at the high school level.

“We’re going to be old, but young at the same time,” he said. “It’s going to a year where you can hopefully get better the longer it goes on.”

Nikia Powell, a senior, is the lone returning starter, although Lakeidra Savage saw some playing time last year.

“Hopefully Lakeidra will be able to come in and kind of be a catalyst for us,” Boggan said.

Powell, Ashley Baker, Olivia Dunklin, Tamara Truitt and Justina Davis are the seniors on the team.

“Ashley Baker played basketball her freshman and sophomore years, but not as a junior, and now she’s back with us as a senior,” Boggan said. “Even though some of these girls don’t have a lot of high school experience, I’ve worked with them before at other levels.”

The Tigers are looking to repeat as region champs and build confidence heading into next year.

“We’re trying to win another region championship because next year, the region will be pretty thick with the addition of Selma and Demopolis,” Boggan said.

The Tigers will kick off their season this Saturday at home against Calhoun.
