While many students will be taking the opportunity to relax next week, athletes from four schools will be traveling to Georgiana to compete in the first annual Butler County Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament.

“We’re trying to open our new gym up right and have something in our new facility,” said BCMS head coach Kirk Norris. “Now we’ve got the room and space to do this, and to my knowledge, it’s the first time something like this has been done in a long time.”

BCMS, St. Jude, Highland Home and Booker T. Washington Magnet School are slated to participate for both the boys and the girls.

“We’ve got some good competition,” Norris said. “I don’t know much about Booker T. Washington, but St. Jude is usually pretty good and Highland Home has a solid team.”

Games will be taking place from 2 p.m. until 6:30 on both Monday and Tuesday.

The Highland Home and St. Jude boys play at 3:30 Monday, with BCMS and BTW facing off at 6:30 p.m.

The HHHS girls and St. Jude will play start the action at 2 p.m., and BCMS and BTW will play at 5 p.m.

“We’re really excited about having this, and we hope we can have a good turnout with everyone out of school,” Norris said. “The admission cost is per day, so that means you could come at 2 p.m. and watch four games on one ticket.”

Admission is $6 per day.
