Mary Virginia Watson Layton

On Saturday, November 7th, at 8:16 p.m., the world lost an angel. Mrs. Mary Virginia Watson Layton died gently at Ollie Steele Burden Manor. She had fought a long battle with respiratory illness and was finally overcome.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Thomas Ford Watson and Mrs. Pluma Stephens Watson; her husband of 55 years, James Monroe Layton, Sr. and her oldest of 3 sons, Mack M. Layton.

“Ms. Virginia”, as so many called her, was a member of Zachary United Methodist Church since 1958. She was a skilled pianist who volunteered her talent to church activities, school programs, and her friends. She was a member of the church music club and the Ladies’ Club.

“Ms. Virginia” retired from the EBR Parish school system where she served as an executive secretary at White Hills Elementary until retirement in 1994. During her employment at White Hills she was chosen as “School Executive Secretary of the Year-1991”.

Services for Mrs. Layton will include visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 12 at Zachary United Methodist Church. Interment in Azalea Rest Cemetery, Zachary.

Pallbearers were her sons, Stephen Lynn Layton of Stuart, FL., and James Layton Jr. of Zachary. Also serving are her brothers, Sam Watson of Panama City, FL, and Frank Watson of Huntsville, AL. Frank Watson’s son, Tim Watson represented him due to illness. Also assisting were John Herty and John Russell, both of Zachary and both deeply respected as friends.

Dr. Greg Davis of Zachary Methodist Church, Reverend Bob Lawton (Ret.) and Reverend Harold Babin (Ret.) led services. Music was presented by Mr. Chris Stevens.

Our mother, sister, and friend will be painfully missed. But we know that she is at home now, in the House of God, with those loved ones who went before her. She is waiting with outstretched arms to welcome us when our time shall come. God bless her, as we all have been blessed by her presence.

Edward L. Lansdon

LANSDON, Mr. Edward L., 57, a resident of Grady died suddenly Sunday, November 15, 2009. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Helicon Cemetery with Rev. Joe Leverette officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mr. Lansdon was preceded in death by his father, Charles A. Lansdon. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Marianne Lansdon; two sons, Scott E. Lansdon and Brett J. Lansdon; mother, Evelyn Adams Lansdon; and three brothers, Ronald (Dianne) Lansdon, John (Candy) Lansdon and Joe (Kim) Lansdon. Active pallbearers will be Albert Mosley, David Worthington, Miles Horn, Jimmy Jordan, Eric Horne, Harold Nelson, Jessie Sankey and Kenny Mason. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Wingard and George Browder. The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

Nellie P. Pugh

PUGH, Mrs. Nellie P., 87, a resident of Luverne died Friday, November 13, 2009. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 16, 2009 at Joquin Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Thomas officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mrs. Pugh was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Pugh, Sr. and two sons, William Martin Pugh and Robert Hugo Pugh.

Survivors include two children, Adrienne (John) Bonczek and Harold (Estora) Pugh, Jr.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Pruitt and Virginia Pugh; and a number of nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were Raymond Butts, Clarence Searight, John A. Carr, Dr. W.A. Beall, Al Slaughter, Gerald Pryor, Franklin King and Windham Stephenson.

Nalani Jean Damon Hail

HAIL, Ms. Nalani Jean Damon, 58, a resident of Honoraville died Monday, November 16, 2009 after an extended illness. Survivors include her husband, Ed Davis; two daughters, Julie (Jeremy) Kehn and Alicia Defee; three grandchildren, Kaylan Defee, Bethany Defee and Andrew Kehn; and a sister, Kanani (Art) Lotito. A memorial service will be scheduled by the family at a later date.

Walter Howard Campbell

CAMPBELL, Mr. Walter Howard, 65, a resident of Luverne died Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Johnny Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Darien Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Motes Campbell; two sons, Chad Campbell and Michael Campbell; two sisters, Laurein Jordan and Dorothy Ellis; and four brothers, Frank Campbell, Joe Campbell, Thomas Campbell and John Campbell. Survivors include four children, Teresa Watson, Gary (Vicki) Campbell, Rickey (Rachel) Campbell and Lisa (Kyle) Rhodes; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; six sisters, Julia Witherington, Susie (Richard) Watson, Jean (Ike) Enos, Ila Mae Campbell, Mary Campbell and Helen Russell; three brothers, George (Marie) Campbell, Bill (Eleanor) Campbell and James Allen (Doris) Campbell.

Active pallbearers will be Kurt Bayman, Jeff Bryan, Michael Motes, Greg Bryan, John Edward Motes and Terry Motes.
