The Georgiana Garden Club met Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Log Cabin.

President Suzy Shepherd welcomed the nine members and two guests present. Roll call was answered with a favorite pine tree. Ann Quates gave the devotional.

The cabin was beautifully decorated with the Thanksgiving theme. Wonderful refreshments were served by hostesses, Ann Quates and Annette Tunnel.

Shepherd introduced Steve Perdue, Butler County Forestry Specialist, who presented the program, “How About That Long Leaf Pine.”

He was presented with a Red-Headed Woodpecker feeder as a thank-you gift.

Chairman Ellen Bush announced the Club’s annual Bake Sale and Craft Show was set for Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Log Cabin.

Christmas Lights Chair Sandra Jones informed the Club the date for decorating the Hank Williams Museum and the Senior Center had been changed from Nov. 23 to Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served in the Cabin afterwards.

Shepherd, chairman of the NGC High School Essay Contest, announced it will be open to grades 9-12 for McKenzie and Georgiana schools and to the children and grandchildren of club members living in the District VI area.

First place Local Winner will receive a $50 Savings Bond from the GGC. National winner receives a $1,000 scholarship and $100 goes to the second place winner. District VI State Winners will receive an extra $25 from District Director Shepherd. Theme: “Respect the World Around Us.” Deadline: Nov. 20, 2009. Any students who are not informed by their schools who would like to enter the contest should call Suzy Shepherd at 336-2326.

Shepherd reported a total of 107 were in attendance at the District VI Fall Meeting in Luverne on Oct. 28. Ann Quates and Annette Tunnel attended along with Shepherd.

The Georgiana Garden Club received many awards: 2nd place in the Holiday Lights and Holiday Houses and three youth awards, 1st place in High School Essay and Smokey Bear Contests and 3rd place in Woodsy Owl.

At the State Convention in April in Dothan, the Georgiana Garden Club won 1st place in State and Regional for “Dollars for Scholars,” receiving a $50 chck. The Mary Hall Ware Award for Distinguished Service was presented to Suzy Shepherd by former GCA president, Margaret Reynolds.

Janet Lewis, former District VI Director, presented $25 checks at the October Fall Meeting for all first place State District VI winners. Winners sponsored by Georgiana Garden Club were: Smokey Bear Contest, Sydnie Ward, Georgiana Magnet School; Ashtyne Cole, High School Essay,Trinity School, and Carrington Cole, Poetry Contest, Trinity School. Ward was unable to attend the meeting to receive his check; the Trinity School winners will get their awards shortly.

The Club Members Christmas Tea at the State Archives and History Building is set for 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday, December 4. Following the tea, a Tree Lighting Service will be held on the Capitol steps at 5:15 p.m.

For reserved seats, members should contact Shepherd by December 1.

The December meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. December 3 at the cabin. Members will decorate the G’ana Senior Center prior to their lunch. Hostesses are Jean Dean and Suzy Shepherd.

The Club chose the National President’s Project for their Garden Therapy.

The club potted 14 pots of daffodils for inactive members and plan to plant some at the Senior Center.
