It’s almost time for an annual rite of autumn in Butler County. The Sweet Potato Festival, sponsored by the Butler County Optimist Club, returns to the Butler County Fairground on Saturday, November 7. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.

Not surprisingly, the tasty orange vegetable and southern food staple will be featured in many treats sold at the festival, including homemade sweet potato pie, cake, bread and custards.

“No one will have to go away hungry from this event,” says Optimist Clara Hudson.

Attendees can also enjoy hot fish sandwiches, French fries, golden fried chicken, chow-chow, Polish sausage, candied apples, boiled peanuts, homemade jams and jellies, cold drinks and more at the festival.

Check out crafts such as hair bows featuring local school colors and an assortment of the practically indestructible Tupperware. Kids can enjoy face painting and a carousel jump inflatable and free blood pressure checks will be available for the adults.

Musical entertainment will be provided by soloists and groups from Ft. Deposit, Luverne, Wilcox County and hometown talents from Greenville. The Fort Dale Academy cheerleaders will also perform.

“Our Sweet Potato Kings and Queens will be crowned by our Butler County Junior Miss Isabella Wesley and Brittany Huckaba, the first runner-up for the title,” Hudson says.

“All the proceeds will go to benefit children here in Butler County. We are asking that everyone come out and share a day of fun as well as support this worthwhile activity.”
