Greenville’s Tea Party is seeking some new members.

Bill Dent, treasurer for the organization, said there would be a meeting for anyone interested in joining the fledgling organization on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Old Mexico* Restaurant.

“We’re asking anyone, any concerned citizen, who is worried about the direction of our government to come out and join us,” said Dent. “We want people to know what the Tea Party is all about. We’re not party-affiliated; we’re for the Constitution. We’re welcoming anyone to join us.”

The organization has already held a pair of demonstrations this year, both in front of Greenville’s City Hall, on April 15 (Tax day), and on Sept. 12. The first one attracted over 150 people, said Dent, while the crowd was limited to “around 100” in September, primarily because of sporadic rain showers.

“Those were mostly by word of mouth,” he said.

Dent said the organization plans an even more active role in the community. The Tea Party has already received a donation of over 700 pocket U.S. Constitutions that they plan to pass out. The donated books came courtesy of Congressman Bobby Bright, and Senators Jeff Session and Richard Shelby.

Tea Party members, said Dent, believe in fiscal responsibility, limited powers of the federal government, and a free market.
