The Alabama Garden Club Record indicates that the Luverne Garden Club’s first President was Mrs. A.L. Watts who presided in 1948 and first brought Luverne on board with other local chapters throughout the state.

“Although there may have been Garden Clubs in Luverne prior to that time, historically we know for sure that the Luverne Garden Club has served its community for over sixty years,” Courtney Shows, Luverne Chapter President, said. “This civic organization strives to encourage gardening, landscape design and the protection and conservation of the natural resources in Luverne”

Members of the Luverne Garden Club participate in the maintenance and horticultural beautification of many areas throughout Luverne, encouraging civic beauty, stimulating roadside landscaping and discouraging litter and unsightly objects along the town’s busy thoroughfares. At its monthly meetings, the Luverne Garden Club features interesting programs which further educate and encourage its members in the areas of horticultural education, landscape beautification, floral arrangements, and other topics centering on the gardening world.

Chapter meetings are held monthly in Luverne to help the members keep abreast of their many local projects, including the Memorial Garden at Emmaus Cemetery, Crenshaw Cultural Plaza in downtown Luverne, Douglass Park, and the Crenshaw Community Hospital’s courtyard. In addition the Luverne Garden Club promotes and presents awards for Christmas decorations and encourages greater observation and participation in National Arbor Day through tree plantings, as well as Smokey the Bear and Woodsy Owl poster contests.

“The Luverne Garden Club is honored this year to host the Alabama District VI meeting with assistance from the Brantley Garden Club, which will be held at the Luverne United Methodist Church in the Dei Center on Wednesday, October 28,” Shows said.
