A Greenville man and former business owner was killed on Saturday after he jumped from an ambulance on Interstate 65 in Jefferson County.

Larry James Salter, 55, was being transported by a Blount EMS ambulance, according to Alabama State Troopers and as reported by The Birmingham News. Salter was struck by a 1999 Buick Century driven by 84-year-old Edith Wells Joice, who was also injured in the accident.

Salter owned and operated Greenville Glass for a number of years in downtown Greenville before selling the business earlier this year. He also owned the Greenville Gym located just a block away on Commerce St. He was a 1972 graduate of Fort Dale Academy.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial followed at Magnolia Cemetery.

Salter was preceded in death by his father, James Rudolph Salter.

He is survived by his wife, Anna K. Salter; daughters, Shannon S. (Tim) Sliger of Atlanta, Ga., Jennifer S. (Dustin) Holt of Tallassee, Abbie Elizabeth Salter of Greenville; grandchildren, Salter and Mary Elle Sliger of Atlanta, Audrey Holt of Tallassee; mother, Eloise Jones Salter; sister, Linda S. (Horace) Horn of Greenville; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
