As always, there will be cute calves, chicks, miniature horses and other barnyard animals at Old Time Farm Day, slated for Saturday, October 31. This year, you can also count on seeing some adoptable, cuddly and very lovable pups and kitties in need of good homes.

“In lieu of a Fall ‘Bark in the Park’ this month, we are going to have an exhibit at OTFD,” said Annie Crenshaw of the Butler County Humane Society.

“Farm Day is such a popular and well-attended event, we feel this will bring a lot of attention to needy animals in Butler County and ways to help them,” Crenshaw said.

Along with bringing a number of adoptable canines and felines at the event, the BCHS will also offer attendees the opportunity to purchase pet treat baskets and handmade gift items, pick up information on keeping pets healthy, and learn about volunteer opportunities for school children and adults.

“We will also offer information on Alabama’s Spay/Neuter Program and the new “Love Them-Fix Them” car tags. Every time someone purchases one of these plates, $42.50 goes into a fund that provided low-cost spay and neutering to Medicaid recipients,” Crenshaw said.

The humane society will offer order forms at the event for their upcoming 2010 Pet Calendar, featuring photos of many much-loved local pets.

“These will be available by early December, and at only $10 per calendar, they make fantastic Christmas gifts and go to such a worthwhile cause,” Crenshaw said.

As always, cash donations “are most welcome.”

The Butler County Humane Society helps support the day-to-day operations of the city shelter and is also raising funds to build a no-kill facility to run in conjunction with the current shelter.

Looking to add a new furry face to your family before OTFD? October is “Adopt A Shelter Dog Month” in the U.S., and the Butler County Humane Society encourages those looking for a “fur-ever friend” to consider a visit to the Greenville Animal Shelter.

“The shelter always has wonderful puppies, along with adult dogs and cats, who are very much in need of good homes,” said Annie Crenshaw of the BCHS.
