After a series of home break-ins earlier this week, a Montgomery man is being held on drug charges and for questioning.

Around 11 a.m. on Thursday, both the Greenville Police Department and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house alarm call on County Road 44 at the city limit.

Investigators found that a house had been broken into, and several items were recovered in the woods around the house.

While the scene was being processed, tracking dogs were also brought in.

Not long afterwards, Sheriff Kenny Harden and Chief Deputy Joe Salter stopped a vehicle on Sherling Lake Road.

After a search of the vehicle revealed drugs, Emmitt Smith, 30, of Montgomery was taken into custody and is being questioned to determine if he had a role in the burglary.

A second break-in was also reported, and Harden said that shoe prints and tire casts from that scene appear to match evidence from the first.

“We’re still continuing this joint operation with the Greenville Police Department, and right now we’re sending the evidence to forensics,” Harden said. “If anyone has seen anything suspicious in the areas of County Road 44 or Sherling Lake Road, we ask them to report it to us or the GPD.”

The number for the BCSO is 382-6521, Harden can be reached by cell phone at 525-0361, and the Greenville Police Department’s number is 382-7461.
