The Williamson County Board of Education rejected five of 10 items proposed by Superintendent Mike Looney in his contract negotiations with the Tennessee school district to become its next Director of Schools. Board members met on Wednesday.

Among the items rejected, according to The Williamson Herald, included:

– An annual salary increase equal to that of licensed school employees, not less than four percent. The board voted to base annual salary increases on what current employees are paid, which has been has high as three percent in the past.

– A performance stipend of five percent of the $168,000 salary Looney would make annually as Director of Schools. The board voted no, but said a performance bonus could be negotiated once goals had been established.

– Health and dental insurance to include family, including $10,000 in orthodontic care.

– A $1 million life insurance policy. The board agreed to offer Looney a $100,000 policy.

– Looney asked for a 10 percent premium on money he would be paid if he were terminated by the board, but it was rejected.

“This is the way contract negotiations go,” said Looney on Friday. “They’ll re-submit something to me, and I will look at it, and return it to them. I don’t anticipate any problems and I know the Williamson County School District is ready for me to start.”

Looney’s proposed start date is Dec. 1.

Looney spent Labor Day Weekend in Williamson County with his family. Looney said he was able to attend two high school football games, meet with members of his future staff, and also parents and students.

“It was a wonderful experience,” he said.
