Allen Stephenson, who partnered with the late Mike Morris to broadcast Greenville High School football games for 13 years, remembered his partner on Thursday as someone who had a “positive outlook on life.”

“Even when Mike had everything in the world to complain about, he didn’t,” Stephenson said. “He saw the good in life and he taught me a lot about living every day to the fullest.”

Morris, who died on Wednesday at age 60, was laid to rest on Friday afternoon at Magnolia Cemetery.

Due to his poor health, Morris’s death did not come as a surprise, Stephenson said.

“Mike had learned to live one day at a time,” he said. “And he was very grateful for his family.” “For Mike, calling those football games was more than just a job. He felt he was doing something good for his community, and he was,” Stephenson said.

As his health declined, Morris and Stephenson asked for and were granted permission to travel with the team to away games last season.

“That was a wonderful experience, getting to ride and eat with the team. He was really proud of Coach Blackmon and the program and very enthusiastic about its future,” Stephenson said.

On Friday night, the chair left empty by Morris’s passing will be filled by friends who will offer their memories about the veteran broadcaster, Stephenson said.

“It’s not the duration, it’s the donation of your life that counts. And Mike was one of those people who makes living in a small town a special thing,” he added.

Kyle Haynes and David Norrell, co-hosts of the morning show on Q-94, recognized Morris and his service to Greenville and Butler County during Wednesday’s program.

“Yes, we were competitors,” said Haynes. “But you’ll find no man who was a better person then Mike Morris.”

Morris is survived by his wife, Becky, and two children, Jennifer Griffiths and John Michael Morris.
