Like their high school counterparts, the Greenville Middle School Tigers took part in a jamboree over the weekend, and both the seventh and eighth grade teams came away with a 2-1 record.

After traveling to Wetumpka, the seventh grade team defeated Marbury and Wetumpka, but fell to Stanhope-Elmore.

The eighth grade team took out Eclectic and Stanhope, but came up just short against Wetumpka.

“We played well,” said head coach Josh McLendon. “The main thing was that we wanted to see if we could run some plays. Snapping, catching, blocking — we did that pretty well.”

“We had some penalties, which was disappointing, but overall they did a great job,” he added.

This Thursday, GMS will play their first regular season game at home against Straughn.

“Straughn is a good team, and they’ve got more kids out than they’ve had before,” McLendon said. “They’re big and physical, and they’ll be ready to play.”

The seventh grade team will play at 5:30 p.m. in Tiger Stadium with the eighth grade team to follow, and admission is $5.

“We just want to encourage everyone to come out and support us,” McLendon said.
