Along with the kickoff of high school football, the Greenville Middle School Tigers are also preparing for their weekend debut.

The Tigers will be traveling to Wetumpka today for a fall jamboree against the Indians, Millbrook, Trinity, Marbury and Eclectic.

“This is just going to be a practice game, like the high school is doing against Luverne,” said head coach Josh McLendon. “We’re mainly going to be focusing on running our plays and getting our timing down.”

The seventh grade team is set to start at 8 a.m., while the eighth graders will play at 10 a.m.

The Tigers lost quarterback Kent Riley to the high school, but Jeffrey Fuller is set to take over under center.

Joining Fuller in the backfield will be Donte Lee, and GMS is hoping to see a solid season out of Marvin Davidson, who McLendon said is playing well.

Davidson has made the move to center on the offensive line.

“He made a sacrifice for the team in moving there, and he’s doing a good job,” McLendon said. “Overall, it’s going to be a collective, team effort this season.”

After the jamboree, the Tigers have to prepare for their first game of the season, which is set for Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.

The GMS Tigers will face off against the Straughn Tigers in that game.

“I’m looking forward to the jamboree and the game,” McLendon said. “The kids are ready to hit someone different and do something other than practice.”
