The first day of school is drawing near, which means that the city of Georgiana is preparing for the seventh annual Back-to-School Bash.

The event, which is geared toward athletes and other Butler County youth, features live music and Christian speakers at the Hank Williams Pavilion.

This year’s Bash is set for Friday, July 31.

Former Auburn defensive tackle Wayne Dickens will be the other speaker.

Dickens played for Auburn earlier this decade, including on the undefeated 2004 team.

“We feel fortunate to have a speaker of the caliber that we have,” said event coordinator Allen Stephenson. “He has a very positive message.”

Stephenson also said he is looking into getting another speaker for the event, and he expects the event to draw close to 1,000 young people.

“All our local public schools will be represented,” he said.

The Bash will also feature some food for the young people in attendance through the work of local churches.

“This is a joint project among various county churches of all denominations,” Stephenson said.

The music group Southland will also be performing.

Kickoff for the Bash is set for 6 p.m. at Hank Williams Park.

“We’re very appreciative of being able to use that facility, and we owe a big ‘thanks’ to the city of Georgiana,” Stephenson said.
