A firearm’s safety course has been scheduled for Saturday, July 25, for those wishing to learn more about guns, gun safety, and the general handling of firearms.

The Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Luverne Police Department, the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office, and retired Marine Clifton Trotter are sponsoring the event, which will be held at the Crenshaw County EMA/E-911 building located at Hwy. 29 and Folmar St. in Luverne. The building is directly behind the Crenshaw County courthouse.

“This is basically a familiarization course with handguns,” Sheriff’s Investigator Ronnie White said. “It’s open for anyone who is interested, but we’re going to gear it more toward women.”

There will be two parts to the day’s events, White said, with the first part being held in the “classroom”, and the second part on the Luverne firing range.

“This is to help women handle firearms safely and be able to take care of themselves if the situation arises,” he said.

The class size is limited to 30, so registration is required. Those participating must supply their own handgun, gun cleaning supplies if you have them, a minimum of 50-100 rounds of ammunition, eye goggles for protection, and ear plugs or ear muffs.

The class will begin at 8 a.m.; there is a $5 fee for refreshments. Participants will take a lunch break on their own. White said that the class could be postponed if bad weather arises.
