After taking care of business in the first three rounds of the All-Star tournament in Luverne, the Greenville Dixie Youth rolled through the final two games to claim the district championship Saturday night.

Against Kinston on Friday night, Greenville pulled off a 13-3 win in four innings.

Ryan Burkett, Drake Cabe, Payton Frazier and Nick Hartley scored in the first inning, which also included big hits by Colby Booker and Chance House.

After the four-spot in the first inning, Greenville put six more runs on the board in the second.

Landon Smothers drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by a bases-clearing triple from Cabe and a two-run home run from Frazier.

Cabe wasn’t done for the night and hit a two-run homer on a hanging pitch in the fourth inning.

That win set up a showdown with Luverne in the championship game, which Greenville won 11-3.

“The first inning was a big one for everyone,” said head coach Kenny Burkett. “Everyone batted, and we scored seven runs. That was the key for us.”

Greenville started the inning in style.

After Burkett reached base, Smothers smacked a two-run home run, which was followed by a solo shot from Cabe as Greenville went back-to-back.

Frazier drew a walk, and the All-Stars rattled off six hits in a row.

“We slowed down after the first inning, but it was pretty much over after that,” Burkett said.

Frazier also pitched the entire game and struck out 11 batters.

“Payton pitched a good game for us, and the defense made plays behind him,” he said.

Now the All-Stars are headed to the state tournament in Lincoln on July 25.

The team will be matched up against a team from District Four, which Burkett says will probably be from Clanton or Prattville.

“We’ve got some team speed, we’ve hit well, and we’ve got plenty of kids that can pitch, so as long as we don’t run into Nolan Ryan, I think we’ve got a good chance to move on,” Burkett said.

One thing Burkett said might affect the team is the margin of victory — Greenville won the district games 14-2, 17-0, 16-0, 13-3 and 11-3.

“We haven’t had a close game, and that might come back to bite us,” he said. “All these games in the state tournament will all be ball games.”

Burkett also said his team has had some solid support from the parents and assistant coaches.

“We’ve had some really great parents,” he said. “We’ve had drinks at practice, cookouts — they’ve been awesome. Spann’s Grocery has also been good to us. Coaches Steve Lee and Ronnie Frazier have done a great job helping me out as well.”
