On May 30, two homes in the Helicon community were the proud recipients of some much needed help and repairs.

Members of the Helicon Community Association met at the homes of Austin Williams and Clara Berry and built handicap-accessible ramps for each of the homes.

“We had about 10 people in all to come help,” association member Joe Foster said. “We had four men and several ladies—I give our ladies credit… they don’t mind working hard.”

Foster said the group began with Williams’ home since it was the bigger project of the two. The East Helicon Road residence received a wheelchair ramp and new front porch.

The group then moved on to the Tucker Road residence of Clara Berry in Grady where they built a new wheelchair ramp for her. Berry has to make frequent trips to her doctor, and her daughter struggled getting her mother’s wheelchair in and out of the home.

“Mrs. Clara was very happy about it,” Foster said. “She sat in the doorway and thanked us over and over.”

The Helicon Community Association had raised close to $600 at a pancake breakfast to help pay for the materials used at the two homes.

“We had a little money left over,” Foster explained. “We intend to do other projects in the near future.”

“We always feel good when we do something for the community,” Foster said. “That’s why we (the association) is there – to give something back to the community.”

The Helicon Community Association meets every third Monday at 7 p.m. at the Helicon Community Center. Volunteers and visitors are always welcome.
