Luverne Parks and Recreation has a busy weekend ahead of it as Director Lee Simmons gets ready for four tournaments of baseball action.

The city of Luverne is hosting the Dixie Sub-District Tournament, which begins this Friday, June 26, at 4 p.m. at E. L. Turner Park. The games will continue through next Wednesday. Following that will be the District Tournament, which begins on July 6.

“We have four teams in the Dixie Darlings’ tournament, and they’ll get started Friday afternoon,” Simmons said.

The 7 and 8-year-old girls’ teams will come from Luverne, Brantley, Troy and Eufaula.

Eufaula goes up against Troy at 6 Friday night, with Luverne facing Brantley at 7:30. Simmons said the games would resume Saturday again at 6 and 7:30 p.m., with the tournament ending by Tuesday night.

The 6-7 coach pitch boys will also begin playing Friday night at 4 p.m. Simmons said there are 7 teams in this tournament, including Luverne, Enterprise, Troy, Greenville, and Eufaula.

The 9 -10 Dixie Minors boys’ tournament also starts Friday and will play through next Wednesday. Six teams will face each other: Luverne, Greenville, Troy, Enterprise, Coffee County, and Eufaula.

Admission for the girls’ tournament games is $3 for adults and $2 for children. Ages 6 and under get in free. For the boys’ tournament games, the admission is $4 for adults and $3 for children on the first night only, Simmons said, because $1 of that goes to the Dixie Scholarship Fund. Admission is regular prices on the other nights.

Luverne Parks and Rec and the city of Luverne will also host the District Tournament beginning July 6, Simmons said, with 8 teams competing at Turner Park. This is for 11and 12-year-old boys.

“We’ll play at 6 and 8 that night on two fields,” he said.

Greenville, Kinston, Brundidge, Coffee County, Luverne, Brantley, Elba and New Brockton will compete against each other. This tournament should run about a week, according to Simmons.

“We didn’t host any tournaments last year, so we’re looking forward to a really busy week,” Simmons said. “This will bring in good revenue for the city.”

Simmons also said that parents and fans would not be allowed to bring in any kind of coolers inside the park; concessions will be sold at the park. Only team coolers are allowed during the tournament games.
