The awards just keep pouring in for baseball players in Crenshaw County. The Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) has honored several county players for their achievements during the 2009 baseball season after making their All-State selections.

From Brantley School, Anthony Gulley made the Super All-State Team, which includes only the top ten players in the state, in addition to claiming the Most Valuable Player spot for AHSAA Class 1A and the Hitter of the Year distinction.

Also, BHS head coach Ashley Kilcrease was named the Class 1A Coach of the Year by the ASWA.

Junior Jared Hall was named to the All-State Team as first baseman; Anthony Gulley for short stop; and Chase Hall to Designated Hitter. Honorable Mention for the All-State Team went to senior Stephen Walker for outfielder.

From Luverne High School, senior Micah Wallace was named to the All-State Team as third baseman, and Monterio May was named as outfielder.

“These are the first two players I’ve coached that made All-State,” LHS head coach Andre Parks said.

Last year, senior Davis Lester made Honorable Mention as first baseman.

“Monterio May finished this season with a .554 batting average, and that will put him in the AHSAA record books as the 11th all-time overall in batting averages,” Parks said. “That is just really awesome.”

Parks said that he was surprised by the announcement of his two All-State team players from Luverne this year.

“This is a huge accomplishment for such a small county with all of these players coming from two of our schools,” Parks said, “and to have the Coach of the Year, Ashley Kilcrease, to come from a small county, too, is another huge accomplishment—something we should all be proud of.”
