Last weekend, the Greenville Tigers made the trip to Gulf Shores to play in the south regional and came away with a 1-2 record.

The Tigers fell to St. Paul’s 16-0, while giving Eufaula a close 5-2 game and beating Gulf Shores 7-2.

The loss to St. Paul’s was the first game of the tournament for Greenville, and head coach Donna Sunnycalb said her team was unprepared.

“We just weren’t ready to play,” she said. “We sat around too much on a delay because the game ahead of us ran long and we weren’t ready.”

Greenville recovered from that loss with a 7-2 win over Gulf Shores.

“I think the biggest thing was the pitching,” Sunnycalb said. “Cortnee Meyers kept them off balance and they didn’t know what to expect. They grounded out a lot to the right side, and we had some solid defense behind the pitching.”

Meyers struck out six in seven innings of work.

On the offensive side, the Tigers got hits from Meyers, Marvia Scott, Nikia Powell, Hollie Halford and Elizabeth Richardson.

The next day, Greenville led Eufaula for a couple of innings before falling 5-2.

Despite the 1-2 finish, Sunnycalb said she was very happy with the way things turned out.

“This was the most successful season since I’ve been here,” she said. “Everyone expected us and Monroe County to be two-and-out, but we shook some things up by beating Gulf Shores.”

Sunnycalb also said that the future looks bright, even though the Tigers are losing Nicole Norton, Kairee Newton and Elizabeth Richardson.

“I’m proud of the way we played, and I feel good about how we ended the season,” she said. “It makes me hopeful for next year that we’re only losing three seniors.”
