With the summer heat already here, the Greenville YMCA is preparing to offer a place to cool down with the opening of the new swimming pool.

The pool is set to open today for YMCA members with the public opening next weekend.

“We’re also going to have a grand opening in the next couple of weeks,” said YMCA director Amanda Phillips.

The pool will eventually be open during the week, but Phillips said that will have to wait until school is out.

“We can’t open during the week just yet because our lifeguards are still in school,” she said.

The opening is the result of a year’s worth of work at the site.

Work on the pool began in mid-May of last year and finished last fall, just in time for cold weather.

In addition to offering a place for residents to cool off, the pool will also give the YMCA Tigersharks swim team a home.

“We’re going to have a swim team again this year, and this pool means that we’ll be able to host meets, which we’re looking forward to,” Phillips said.

The pool will be open for members this weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Regular hours have not been announced yet.
