The county’s two Tigers — McKenzie and Greenville — took part in a different kind of county showdown on Thursday with a junior varsity softball doubleheader in Greenville.

The games were fairly even, and each team came away with a win.

McKenzie claimed the first game of the series 8-3 with a big fourth inning.

Brittany Guard and A.J. Sanford put McKenzie’s first runs on the board in the third inning.

The pair scored again, along with Kristin Lassiter, Kayla Gandy, Abbi Yeatts and Ashley Richie in the fourth inning.

Greenville responded with runs from Bridgette Patterson, Tyleshia McDonald and Kenyatta Peterson in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn’t enough.

The second game was closer, with Greenville using some runs in the fourth inning to claim a 6-4 win.

Greenville jumped out to a 2-0 run in the bottom of the first, and McKenzie put runners on second and third in the top of the second but were unable to score.

In the top of the third, McKenzie put four runs on the board.

Jenni Ballard and Kristen Ballard scored on a throw to third base that went off-line to tie the game at two.

After a pitching change, McKenzie got two more runs from Lassiter and Gandy on a passed ball.

Greenville picked up a run in the third inning with a triple from Cortnee Meyers, who came in on a ground ball from Abby Blackmon.

In the fourth, Greenville got runs from Whitney Boswell and Peterson, who each scored on wild pitches, and Meyer was again knocked in by Blackmon.

That win was the second of the season for Greenville and the second of coach Stacey Meyers’ head coaching career.

“I’m really proud of them because we were down and came back to win,” Meyers said. “It was a team effort. We also got some good pitching. Tyleshia McDonald did a fine job for us.”

McKenzie’s head coach Miles Brown said it was a good game for his girls for the experience.

“We played a good game and worked a pitcher we hadn’t pitched all year,” he said. “We got some good experience.”
