A historic event will occur in the Camellia City this weekend when the Greenville Lions host the 2009 District 34N Lions Club Convention.

“This will be the last convention ever for this district,” said Greenville Lions president Hubert Little. “Due to redrawing district lines in the coming year, 34-N will no long exist. So it is a historic occasion and we are looking forward to a good event right here in our hometown.”

Little said it has been a number of years since Greenville had last hosted the event.

Approximately 85 Lions and their spouses have already registered for the convention, which kicks off Friday night, March 27 with a dinner at The Chef’s Table downtown.

Entertainment will follow at the Ritz Theatre downtown with the District Governor’s Reception to follow back at The Chef’s Table.

Saturday, March 28, kicks off with exercise for a good cause with registration at 7 a.m. for the Stride Walk taking place in the First Baptist Church parking lot. The event will benefit Camp Seale Harris for children and youth with juvenile diabetes.

The walk takes place at 8 a.m., with a continental breakfast to follow at 8:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center.

Convention registration follows at 9 a.m. with the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Spouses will be feted with a Fun Day arranged by Main Street director Nancy Idland, with visits to historic Greenville sites, more entertainment and special shopping discounts at local businesses.

“We are thrilled with this opportunity to host the convention and we welcome our fellow Lions from district 34-N. We hope the city will join us in making all our visiting Lions and their spouses feel very welcome, too,” said Little.
