A comeback attempt by the Greenville Tigers took the Charles Henderson Trojans down to the wire, but CHHS pulled out a 55-54 win over the Tigers in Thursday’s subregional matchup.

After trailing for most of the second half, the Tigers pulled to a 48-48 tie with 2:45 to play in the game and then took the lead with a basket by Nikia Powell.

However, the Trojans wouldn’t trail for long.

On the next trip down the court, Niara Shipmon hit a three-pointer to give Charles Henderson a 51-50 lead.

That one-point difference set the stage for no fewer than four lead changes in the last minute of the game.

Greenville could have tied the game or taken the lead, but the Tigers missed several key free throws in the waning seconds.

GHS had a last-gasp chance to win after the Trojans missed a free throw with 2.9 seconds left, but the Tigers couldn’t advance the ball down the court before the horn sounded.

“Our girls played hard and did a good job, but Troy just came in here and scrapped it out,” said head coach Ronald Bogan. “Free throws killed us, but we had our opportunities.”

The Tigers were unable to stop Niara Shipman and Erica Henderson, who scored 22 and 20 points, respectively.

“There was no mystery to them,” Bogan said. “It was just a matter of stopping it.”

The Tigers were also playing without Lakeidra Savage and Alexis Salter.

“Decision making on our part, on and off the court, hurt us,” Bogan said.

Nicole Norton led the Tigers with 19 points, while Amber Andrews scored 13 and Rachel Williams had 10.

“I feel sorry for our seniors because one of our goals was to make it to Troy for the regionals,” Bogan said.

The Tigers end the season with a 16-8 overall record.
