A mixture of old favorites and new fun and games is in the works for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in Butler County.

“Rustlin’ for a Cure” is scheduled for May 8 and 9 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. at the Greenville YMCA football field.

Gerri McGinnis, activities chair for Relay, says she has come up with some new twists to add to the familiar activities of past Relays.

“Of course, we will bring back our hula hoop contests, Relay Idol and our male beauty pageant, but we want to have some fresh air in the mix, too,” McGinnis told fellow board members at the monthly ACS board meeting Wednesday.

Among the ideas McGinnis pitched: a motorcycle show, a special children’s area, chicken chase, pony rides, a mechanical bull, spinner/bingo, a decorated bike contest, pet contest, break dance contest, most unusual talent contest and pool tourney.

“I’d also like us to consider dividing the pageant into two competitions, one for the children and one for adults,” McGinnis said.

“We are looking for a fun mix of activities that will appeal to all ages and we going to aim for continuing these until 6 a.m.”

Event chair Galahad Smith announced at least 40 teams were already committed to the event.

In other Relay news, the Survivors’ Luncheon is set for May 1 at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church in Greenville.

Harlan Burton will return to entertain the crowd, with the luncheon catered by Preister’s Pecans.
