Luverne devours Straughn

The Luverne Tigers made a meal off the visiting Tigers of Straughn High School as the home team walked away with a resounding 62-38 win Tuesday night, Jan. 20.

Luverne struggled to get points on the board during the first quarter, but ended it with an 8-8 tie.

The real battle began during the second quarter as both teams got out their claws with neither team going down without a fight. However, Straughn held onto a tight lead by the end of the second quarter, 23-18.

After halftime, the Luverne Tigers stepped up their game and began pulling ahead of Straughn. With 1:05 left in the third quarter, Sophomore Morrease Barber made a slam dunk, helping to seal a 35-33 lead for the Tigers going into the final quarter.

Luverne held on to their tight lead, which soon stretched into a big lead. Sophomore Robert Freeman and Sophomore Lonnie Freeman dropped in two points each within the first minute of the final quarter.

With 6:03 left in the game, Morrease Barber put up a rebound for two points, and Junior Brandon McGhee added two more points with Barber in on the assist.

Robert Freeman dropped in six more points with less than three minutes left on the board.

Luverne only allowed Straughn to add five more points to their score, as LHS got on a winning roll.

Within the last 37 seconds, Junior Donald Burnett added two more points, giving Luverne the final win of 62-38.
