The McKenzie boys moved up in the region standings with a convincing 65-52 win over Florala Tuesday night in McKenzie.

At the end of the first quarter, the Tigers had jumped out to a 20-10 lead with aggressive defense and a faster tempo on offense.

“I think we’re just now getting comfortable speeding the game up,” said head coach Miles Brown.

The Tigers led by as much as 24 points, but Florala cut into the lead in the fourth quarter.

“We’re still getting better, and we’re continuing to learn and understand what we want to do,” Brown said.

One thing that contributed to the Tigers’ success was the even distribution of the points among the team.

Five players scored in double digits, but no one scored more than 12.

Emmanuel Johnson had 12, Melvin Owens scored 11, and Armond Ball, Calvin Henderson and Antonio Lett each added 10.

Cliff Pugh wasn’t far behind with eight points.

“It makes life easier on the coach when it’s that balanced,” Brown said.

The McKenzie girls didn’t fare as well and fell to Florala 55-21.

The Tigers struggled from the start and the Wildcats led 30-7 at halftime.

Aleshia Stuckey was the leading scorer with eight points, while both Anna Howell and Brittany Guard scored four.
