Before Saturday’s rivalry matchup with Georgiana, the Greenville Tigers had to face area foe Wilcox Central.

The girls came away with a win, while the boys were dealt a 10-point loss.

Wilcox jumped ahead of the boys 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, and though both offenses picked up in the second quarter, Greenville trailed 28-23 at halftime.

The Tiger struggled in the second half, and head coach Bryant Marlow said turnovers were part of the problem.

“Turnovers killed us,” he said. “They also out-rebounded us, and we missed too many free throws. Everything that could go wrong did.”

Down by 10 at the end of the third quarter, Greenville pulled within two points in the fourth, but couldn’t get over the hump and Wilcox won 60-50.

“We got within two, but just let it slip away,” Marlow said. “We’ve got the potential to be great, but we’ve got to do a better job of controlling the game.”

Jarques Burnett was the leading scorer with 19 points and Brentley Hill added 13.

The Greenville girls were able to pull out a 56-47 win over Wilcox in action earlier that night.

Greenville led 29-25 at halftime and pulled away in the second half.

Scoring for the Tigers was evenly spread around, with Nikia Powell scoring 12, LaKeidra Savage contributing 11, and both Amber Andrews and Alexis Salter scoring 10 each.
