The City of Greenville has entered into a contract with an asbestos inspection firm to determine whether or not an estimated 50 structures can be demolished safely by the city as part of a Community Block Development Grant.

The city has received funding through the CDBG community enhancement funds.

One project includes both Alabama Highway 10, from I-65, up to Baptist Hill neighborhood, said Circuit Clerk Sue Arnold.

The other area includes homes buildings located in Methodist Hill neighborhood.

The council approved a resolution entering into a contract with EviroChem Laboratories during Monday’s meeting.

The service agreement calls for asbestos inspections of housing units as well as sampling and testing of those housing units, which were identified in the original grant proposal.

EviroChem will receive $112.50 per housing unit for testing.

A study of the area to determine its historical significance to Greenville also had to be conducted as required by CDBG, said Arnold.
