It took an extra four action-packed minutes of overtime, but the Greenville Tigers claimed their second win of the year 67-61 over Hillcrest.

Greenville held a 28-17 lead at halftime, but Hillcrest fought back in the third quarter, and the game was tied at 41 heading into the fourth quarter.

After going up 51-50 as the clock was winding down, Hillcrest started working the clock.

The Jaguars got two quick scores, but Brentley Hill came through in the clutch for the Tigers.

Hill hit a layup with 20.6 seconds to go to cut the lead to 55-52, and with less than six seconds left, Hill connected on a three-pointer from the right wing to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Greenville widened the score with fast breaks and layups, but Hillcrest wouldn’t go away.

After a few insurance points from Mikwese Claybourne, Greenville secured the 67-61 victory.

“The main key for us was ball control and no turnovers when it mattered,” said head coach Bryant Marlow. “We had 11 turnovers in the third quarter, and we’ve got to be smarter than that with the ball.”

Marlow said it’s good to win a close game, especially in the early part of the season.

“It really helps the guys when it comes down to these tight games,” he said. “It’s good to know that we have experience in this kind of game, so that when it comes crunch time later in the season we can pull it out.”

Claybourne was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 19 points.

Hill added 15, and Jarques Burnett had 14 points.
