A Greenville man is facing drug and animal cruelty charges after a search early Thursday morning yielded drugs and several abused animals.

Terrance Jarell Murphy, 22, of Greenville faces seven counts of cruelty to animals, first degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office was executing a search warrant on Cosby Lane and discovered a large amount of marijuana and currency, a gun and scale.

Deputies also determined that there were a number of abused animals in the home.

“There were several pit bulls, and some of them had serious wounds that looked like they’d been fighting,” said Sheriff Kenny Harden.

Two of the animals were dead, but the others have been turned over to the Humane Society.

The drug arrest was the second of the week for the Sheriff’s Department.

On Tuesday, a deputy on patrol observed a vehicle being driven by Sean Smith, a 33-year-old Greenville resident, and the deputy was aware of warrants out for Smith.

During the arrest, marijuana and other controlled substances were located.

Leviticus Guytrell Simpson, also 33, was also arrested.

Both men face charges of first degree possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

“This is just a continuance of the war on drugs,” Harden said. “Our deputies are working well, and we’re working to cut down on the amount of drugs in Butler County. It was a job well done.”
