Teens had a chance to show off their team spirit and compassion for the community’s needy last week at Greenville High School.

The GHS Tiara Club, a service club new to the school this year, sponsored an Auburn-Alabama Canned Food Drive with all donations going to the Butler County DHR.

GHS principal, Dr. Charles Farmer, an Auburn grad and self-professed die-hard Tiger fan, promised a treat to the victors: his performance live over Tiger TV, singing the winning team’s fight song.

“The kids really got into this,” said Tiara Club sponsor Shawnda Bell, all grins Friday afternoon as she waited to see Farmer’s performance on the TV in her classroom.

“Every day, the kids were asking me, ‘How many cans so far? How many more do we need?’ We had such great participation across the board with students and faculty. That’s what our club is about, helping serve the needs of our community.”

By last Friday afternoon, boxes and boxes of food filled the hallway, ready to be delivered – far exceeding the 250 cans collected last year. But who had ultimately shown the most team spirit?

Let’s just say Farmer had to sing a brand new tune.

That’s right – Alabama fans donated 774 cans; Auburn fans, 657. That makes a grand total of 1,431 cans.

“I’ve never sung this song in my entire life, so please bear with me,” Farmer asked as he prepared to perform the “other team’s” fight song.

The principal then proceeded to gulp some Scope as he joked, ” I had to wash that mess right out of my mouth.”
