VALETA TAYLOR SPRADLEY

SPRADLEY, Mrs. Valeta Taylor, 93, a resident of Petrey died Wednesday, November 5, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2008, from the chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Petrey officiating. Interment followed in the Petrey Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Spradley was preceded in death by her husband, Kirk S. Spradley. Survivors include her daughter, Carole S. Hinshaw; two grandchildren, Darren (Maria) Hinshaw and Kevin (Ipek) Hinshaw; and two great-grandchildren, David and Pamela Hinshaw. The family received friends at the funeral home Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 605 Montgomery Road, Altamonte Springs, FL 32816 or to one’s favorite charity.

EDWARD LAMAR

TURNER, JR.

A native and lifelong resident of Luverne, Alabama, died Thursday, November 13, 2008, at the age of 91 in Luverne, Alabama. The funeral services were held on Monday, November 17, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Luverne. The family received visitors at Turner’s Funeral Home on Sunday, November 16, from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Mr. Turner was the son of Edward Lamar Turner, Sr., and Velma Foster of Luverne. After graduating from the Riverside Military Academy in 1935, he attended the University of Alabama from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Commerce and Business Administration in 1939. He was a member of Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity. He served in the United States Navy in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Theatres during World War II and achieved the rank of lieutenant. After returning from the war, he founded the Luverne Implement Company which he operated until 1980. He received the Outstanding Implement Dealer’s Award in 1965 from the Alabama Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association. He was a Standard Oil Company dealer from 1956-1976 and received the Outstanding Oilman’s Award in 1970 and 1972 from the Alabama Petroleum Council. He served as Executive Director of the Alabama Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association from 1980 to 1992. He served as a member of the Luverne City Council from 1958 to 1962 and 1964 to 1968, Mayor Pro-Tem from 1964 to 1968, and Mayor of the City of Luverne from 1972 to 1980. He was the first president of the Luverne Area Chamber of Commerce and received the Man of the Year Award in 1987 from the Luverne Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Luverne, Alabama, serving as Deacon and Sunday School teacher for 35 years and a past Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was active in the alumni affairs of the University of Alabama and served as President of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association in 1972-1973 and was a recipient of the National Alumni Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1991. He was a member of the Luverne Rotary Club, served as President in 1956 and was Rotarian of the Year in 2002-2003. In 1982 he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions and service.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Marjorie Holland Turner. He is survived by his son, Edward L. Turner, III (Mary Lee) of New York/Paris, his daughter, Joy Turner Rue (Thomas) of Mobile, Alabama, three grandchildren, Brantley Turner Bradley (Douglas) of New York, New York, Emily Rue Holmes (John), and Harriet Sidney Rue of Birmingham, Alabama, and three great-grandchildren, William Turner Holmes, Samuel Thomas Holmes, and Zander Melei Bradley. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Josephine Holland Partridge, of Luverne. He was also preceded in death by his brother, John W. Turner, DMD, of Montgomery, Alabama.

WILEY CLAY MCGUINTY, JR.

MCGUINTY, Mr. Wiley Clay, Jr., 52, a resident of Montgomery, AL died Friday, November, 14, 2008. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2008 from Turner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Cliff Stevers and Deacon Denzell Catrett officiating. Interment followed in Siloam Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mr. McGuinty was preceded in death by his parents, Clay and Betty Walker McGuinty. He is survived by one brother, Jimmy (Norma) McGuinty; six sisters, Carol (Burl) Kelley, Christine McGuinty, Karen (Charlie) Smith, Charlotte Chandler, Mary Leddy, and Cindy (Mike) Bailey; a special aunt, Jean (Wayne) Bradley; and a host of nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers were Burl Murphy and friends at Wiregrass Construction.

Active pallbearers were nephews and cousins of Mr. McGuinty. The family extends a special thanks to Vista Care Hospice.

CATHY REEVE DODDS

DODDS, Mrs. Cathy Reeve, 60, a resident of Luverne, AL died Saturday, November 15, 2008. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November, 18, 2008, in Brunson Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Wesley Spivey and Harris Cornett officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Dodds was preceded in death by her father, Bill Reeve. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Mike Dodds; two daughters, Margaret (Lamar) Eagerton and Jennifer Harry; five step-children, Jeff (Terease) Dodds, Mark Dodds, Jody Dodds, Tammy Turner, and Jeremy (Laura) Dodds; ten grandchildren; her mother, Wadeene Reeve; a sister, Cindy Light; a brother, Don Reeve; along with several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. Active pallbearers were Jeff Dodds, Mark Dodds, Jeremy Dodds, Lamar Eagerton, Sean Reeve, and Casey Reeve.

BERNICE L. SORRELLS

SORRELLS, Mrs. Bernice L., 69, a resident of Brantley, Ala., died Saturday, November 15, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at the Brunson Chapel Methodist Church with Rev. Wesley Spivey officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Sorrells was preceded in death by her husband, Hayward Sorrells. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Nelda) Sorrells and Keith (Cheryl) Sorrells; three grandchildren, Jordan Sorrells, Matthew Sorrells and Martin (Jamie) Jackson; one great- grandson, Dorsett Jackson; one sister, Betty Campbell; and two brothers, Douglas (Foy Ann) Harrelson and Charles Harrelson.

Active pallbearers were Matthew Sorrells, Martin Jackson, Lamar Battle, David Catrett, Robert Morgan and Kyle Flowers.

GROVINE RICE CAPPS

CAPPS, Mrs. Grovine “Dean” Rice, 79, died November 16, 2008, at her home in Dallas, Texas. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 23 at Luverne Emmaus Cemetery, with the Rev. William Leverette officiating and Turner Funeral Home directing. Dean was born to Grover Rice and Samantha Humphries Rice in Lineville, Alabama, on February 15, 1929. She attended Auburn University (then Alabama Polytechnic Institute) and was the only woman in the Pharmacy School graduating class of 1950. She began her 41-year career as a hospital pharmacist in Luverne, and it was there that she met and married her beloved husband of 36 years, David Lee Capps. Later she lived with her family in Valdosta, Macon and Riverdale, Georgia. In retirement, she moved to Dallas, Texas, where she served on the Board of the Retired Senior Volunteers Program and was active as a volunteer for Bryan’s House, an organization providing services to children with HIV/AIDS. Dean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Donald Humphries Rice, sister Joyce Humphries Blanton, and son David Rice Capps. She is survived by sister Mary Rice Ingram of Opelika; daughter Dianne Capps Saslaw, son-in-law Michael Saslaw, and granddaughters Jennifer and Alexandra Saslaw, all of Dallas, Texas; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday at Turner Funeral Home from noon until immediately preceding the service.

IRVIN GIL WILSON

Wilson, Irvin Gil, 70, a resident of Montgomery, AL died Monday, November 17, 2008, at his residence. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. from Leak-Memory Chapel with Minister Jim Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Christine (Chris) Wilson; daughter, Debra Whitaker; sons, Irvin Craig Wilson (Kim) and Scott Wiginton (Wanda), brother, Travis Wayne Wilson (Mary Ann); six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irving Nephi and Fletcher Stoddard Wilson and a sister, Sylvia Wilson.

Active pallbearers will be Robert Gardner, Cass Gardner, Tommy Williams, Wesley Anderson, Joseph James, and Stephen Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Phill Perry, Bill Andrews, Roger Fuller, Nelson Pounds, Jerrell Lambert, Mark Wnuk and Bob Hendrix.

The family would also like to acknowledge the caring staff of the Montgomery Cancer Center for their support.
