The Brantley Bulldogs added another win to their perfect season last Friday night as they sent J.U. Blacksher home with a 49-16 whipping.

Bulldog running back Anthony Gulley didn’t waste any time Friday night getting points on the board as he racked up three touchdowns in the first quarter, one on a 79-yard run, one on a 95-yard run, and the third touchdown came on a 78-yard pass reception from Quarterback Chase Hall. Hall has missed the last four weeks of action due to an injury he received against McKenzie.

Senior Stephen Walker scored a touchdown on a one-yard run for Brantley during the first quarter. Kicker Britt Barnes added 7 perfect PATs all night long, putting the Bulldogs in a big 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

During the second quarter, the Bulldogs continued to add points to the board as Junior running back Jamie Burnett grabbed an interception and scored on a 25-yard run. Sophomore Devontay Porter added another 6 points during the second quarter on a 61-yard run as Brantley ended the first half with a commanding 42-0 lead.

But the Bulldogs weren’t finished with J.U. Blacksher as quarterback Chase Hall ran 40 yards for a touchdown during the third quarter. Britt Barnes’ kick was good, and Brantley had racked up its final points for the night.

J.U. Blacksher finally got on the scoreboard Friday night during the fourth quarter as they scored two touchdowns in addition to a two-point conversion each time giving them their only 16 points of the game.

On offense, the Bulldogs’ leading rusher was Anthony Gulley with 6 carries for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Stephen Walker had 8 carries for 40 yards and one touchdown, and Devontay Porter had 2 carries for 65 yards and one TD. Chase Hall was 3 or 5 for 100 yards passing and one TD, and he had one carry for 40 yards for one touchdown.

Junior Cameron Wright led the Bulldogs’ defense with 12 tackles and one tackle for loss, while Jared Wiley had 11 tackles for the night. Junior Jesse Haveard racked up 8 tackles, while Jamie Burnett had 6 tackles, 2 interceptions, with one of those interceptions for a TD. Cassius Tillus had one interception, and Jared Hall had 3 tackles and 3 sacks.

Brantley head coach David Lowery said that everyone was healthy again, and everyone got to play Friday night, which is good news as the Bulldogs face one of their biggest opponents this week, Sweetwater, in the third round of Class 1A Region 2 playoff action.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a normal week this week and be ready for them,” Lowery said. “By this time of the year, you have to hope that what you’re doing is right, so you keep on doing it well. There’s no sense in starting something new now.”

The Sweetwater Bulldogs have an 11-1 season this year, with their only loss coming at the hands of Leroy.

“Since I’ve been here, we have faced them twice,” he said. “In 2005, we beat them in the second round of the playoffs, and in 2004, they knocked us out in the fourth round.”

Sweetwater has won the Class 1A state championship in 2004, 2006, and 2007, and Coach Lowery expects it to be another one for the history books.

“It should be a good game,” he said.
