21 people in Butler County are still eligible to receive economic stimulus checks, according to IRS spokesperson Dan Boone.

The checks total $10,088.

“The checks include economic stimulus payments and regular tax refunds,” said Boone. “Just a simple address update will allow the IRS to get this money into the hands of its owners.”

Nearly $1.56 million in regular refund checks were returned by the U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address errors.

Boone said it is crucial that taxpayers who may be due a stimulus check update their addresses with the IRS by Nov. 28. By law, economic stimulus checks must be sent out by Dec. 31 of this year.

The undeliverable economic stimulus checks average $583.

Boone said once per year the IRS is allowed to disclose taxpayers’ names in hopes of uniting them with their money.

“If they have moved away, we’re hoping someone local might know how to contact them and will let them know they have money waiting. If they still live in the area, this will serve as a reminder to them to contact IRS with a good address so they can collect their money,” he said.

Nationwide, more than 279,000 economic stimulus checks totaling about $163 million and more than 104,000 regular refund checks totaling about $103 million were returned to the IRS.
