Now that football season has ended for the Greenville Tigers, they are beginning to focus more fully on basketball season.

The Tigers enter the season after an offseason full of change.

Not only did Greenville lose seven seniors from last year’s team, but they have also been through a coaching change.

Bryant Marlow has assumed head coaching duties for the Tigers.

“The main thing we’re looking to do right now is get things established with me being the new head coach,” Marlow said. “We’ve got to set the foundation for the program.”

Despite the fact that this is Marlow’s first basketball head coaching job, that doesn’t mean the staff is inexperienced.

Assisting Marlow will be Jerome Harris III, who brings several years of experience to the table.

Harris served as head coach at Georgiana High School two years ago, followed by a stint with the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department.

“We’ve got a young team this year, and not many seniors,” Harris said. “It’s going to be an enjoyable ride. We’ve got lots of intensity, and we’re going to have to work hard and win.”

Even though the Tigers lost a strong senior class, many underclassmen on the team got playing experience last season.

The Tigers will be looking at players like Brentley Hill, Mikwese Claybourne, Nick McHenry, Jeremy Robinson and Jacques Burnett to step up this year.

“We’ve got a good chance to be good this year, win and be successful,” Marlow said.

Greenville’s first game is tentatively set for next Friday against Wetumpka, but that will be determined by Wetumpka’s football fortunes.

The Indians are still in the playoffs, and a win Friday night against Auburn would postpone the basketball game.
