The Crenshaw County Domestic Violence Task Force and the Butler County Child Advocacy Center/Safe Harbor hosted a silent auction and dinner on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Crenshaw County Country Club, and it proved to be a big success for the organizations.

A steak dinner with all the trimmings was served, as Kathy Smyth, director of the Butler County Child Advocacy Center and member of the board of directors for the Domestic Violence Task Force, welcomed approximately 60 people in attendance. Several local businesses helped to sponsor the event, and they were recognized for their generosity.

“This year’s auction items were not only items donated by local businesses and individuals, but they also included art work that had been donated by many of Crenshaw County’s own talented artists,” Jeannie Gibson, CCDVTF chairperson, said. “The local artists’ items were the ‘hot’ items in the auction.”

Smyth thanked the artists for sharing their pieces for this worthwhile cause.

Brent Cosby, counselor with Laurel Oaks Behavioral Health Center and a Luverne native, was the guest speaker. Cosby provided beneficial information about the signs and symptoms of domestic violence that related to all age groups.

Throughout the evening’s event, The Drop Mellow Band provided wonderful background music. Following the meal, there was one more chance for silent bids before the results were announced.

Gibson thanked everyone for attending and for opening their wallets for an excellent cause. The proceeds from the auction and dinner will be used to help domestic violence victims and children and to promote awareness in the area.

“The event was a great success,” Gibson said. “We want to thank everyone who helped to make this night such a big success not only for us, but also for the victims in need of these services.”
