Peavy, Sr., Mr. James Abbott, of Greenville, Alabama, died Monday, November 10, 2008, at home surrounded by his family.
The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church in Greenville on Thursday, November 13, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Tim Patton and Dr. Paul McLendon officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Greenville.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, November 12, 2008, at Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home from 5 until 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Brent Peavy, Chris Peavy, Patrick Peavy, Scott Simpson, Mathew Peavy, Jeremy Soliday, Ryan Harwood and Dan Neilsen. Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home directing.
He was born September 24, 1916 in Chapman,Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his parents General Marion Peavy and Eula Lee Boutwell Peavy. Mr. Peavy is survived by his wife, Hazel Duncan Peavy of Greenville, AL, Sons, Major James Abbott Peavy, Jr., (retired USAF) and wife Joan Foster Peavy of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Lee Alan Peavy and wife Debbie Owsley Peavy of Montgomery, AL, Daughters , Signa Simpson (and late husband – Bill) of Leland, NC, Merry Petitti and husband Pete Petitti of Pike Road, AL, grandchildren, USAF Lt. Col. James Brent Peavy, Patrick Peavy, Chris Peavy, Scott Simpson and wife Briar Simpson, Cami Soliday and husband Jeremy, Robyn Harwood and husband Ryan, Meredith Nielsen and husband Dan Nielsen, Laura Paddock, Sara Kate Peavy, Anna Beth Peavy, Mathew Peavy and great-granddaughters, Maddie and Anna Simpson, Julian and Lily Soliday and Maddox Harwood.
Mr. Peavy was an electrical engineer and worked for W. T. Smith, Union Camp and International Paper, retiring after 47 years.
Mr. Peavy was a member and a deacon of the First Baptist Church and on various other committees.
He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Greenville and Director of the Butler County Fair and managed the fairgrounds for many years; was a WWII veteran serving in the Merchant Marines (a division of the Coast Guard); a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, Eureka Lodge #64, Greenville; on the Board of Directors for Fort Dale Academy; on the City Council in Greenville; served on the Planning Commission in Greenville; also serving on the Board of Directors for the Laguna Beach Property Owners Association in Panama City Beach, FL.
