Alabama achieved a historic milestone on Tuesday as registered voters reached the three million mark.

Secretary of State Beth Chapman announced the news.

“This is a remarkable milestone in Alabama’s history,” said Chapman.

Chapman’s office said the number has increased dramatically within the last three months. The Nov. 4 General Election is less than a week away.

At the Butler County Board of Registrars, totals were not available at press time, but registrar Charlene Powell said – like the rest of the state – the number of registered voters were up.

As of Sept. 30, Butler County had 13,727 registered voters in both the active and inactive categories, according to the Secretary of State’s office.

Besides the Presidential Election, Butler County voters will also help decide the 2nd Congressional District race between Republican Jay Love and Democrat Bobby Bright, and the U.S. Senate election between incumbent Republican Jeff Sessions and Democrat Vivian Figures.

Locally, a pair of Republican incumbents face Democratic opposition in Butler County Commission elections. District 1 Commissioner Jerry Hartin faces Lawrence Philpot, and District 5 Commissioner Glenn King faces Lynn Watson.

Also, seated board member Joe W. Lisenby will face Tanya H. Speir in the District 3 Board of Education race.
