They were hit makers of the early rock and roll era. From “Only You” to “Twilight Time,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “If I Didn’t Care”: The legendary Platters made music perfect for slow dances, lingering glances, and falling in love.

And those classic hits will be coming to Greenville’s Ritz Theatre later this month.

The Greenville Area Arts Council (GAAC) continues its season with the musical performance, slated for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27.

Other chart-toppers recorded by the Platters over their long career include “The Magic Touch,” “The Great Pretender,” and “Harbor Lights.”

The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in its inaugural year of 1998. The Platters were the only group to have three songs included on the smash hit “American Graffiti” soundtrack: “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “The Great Pretender” and “Only You (And You Alone).”

The original five teens who made up the group were under the direction of famed manager and songwriter Buck Ram.

The current lineup continues under the direction of Ram’s company, Five Platters, Inc. The group has featured some of the greatest singers of rock and roll through its changing lineup over the decades.

“I know a lot of folks out there enjoy this kind of music and remember it with pleasure, and a lot of younger people will love it once they hear it. It’s music that has stood the test of time,” said Nancy Idland, executive director of the GAAC.
