Eagles square off against undefeated Edgewood

The Fort Dale Eagles convincingly handled Macon-East last Friday night, and they will take a break from region action this Friday against Edgewood Academy.

Despite the fact that the Wildcats are a 2A team and not in Fort Dale’s region, it appears that the Eagles will have their hands full.

Edgewood comes in with a 5-0 record.

“I would imagine that they’re one of the better teams we played so far this year, but it’s tough to tell,” said Fort Dale head coach Speed Sampley.

Sampley said the Wildcats have a number of athletic players, including quarterback Chris Tice and running back Cody Lee.

“Lee is probably the best offensive threat they have at any time,” Sampley said.

Lee enters the game averaging 104 yards per game on the ground.

Sampley said his team needs to play a complete game against Edgewood.

“We need to be consistent on offense and tackle well on defense,” he said. “They’ve got some good special teams, and they block a lot of kicks. We’ve got to make sure we don’t give them anything cheap through a special teams mistake.”

Fort Dale will have to be without Brantley McKeown, who went down near the end of the Macon-East game.

The Eagles were hoping for merely a sprained ankle, but it turns out that McKeown’s leg is broken above the ankle.

“That’s the second senior we’ve lost, and we’ve just got to adjust and have our backups ready to play,” Sampley said.

Kickoff against Edgewood is set for 7 p.m. Friday night in Millbrook.
