The Brantley Rural Club met at Coggin’s Dry Creek Campground for their September 17th meeting. President Ann Holland called the meeting to order and conducted a short business meeting. The treasurer’s report was given by LaRue Carnes. Plans were made for their annual Christmas luncheon to be held at The Chicken Shack in early December, date to be announced.

Other members present were Dorothy Cook, Susie Carnes, Roxine Currie, Louise Morgan, Inez Rayborn, Eva Ray Adkinson and Jewel Crowe. Ina Ruth Wallace was a guest.

The club encourages new membership. If you are interested, call any one of the members for detailed information.

The club has several quilts to be quilted. Quilting is their main fundraiser.

The October meeting will be held October 16th in the home of Delores Mount.

The Boot Scootin’ Line Dancers from the Colley Senior Complex in Troy, Ala., came to the Luverne Nutrition Senior Center once again September 12, 2008, starting at 10:30, line dancing to karoke music sung by William Simmons and Uncle Guy Simmons. Also Hannis Holmes joined the singing, and the dancers performed several line dances.

The seniors in attendance enjoyed having the dancers and the music, and hope to have them back next month for more entertainment. All those performing were seniors.

Dancers were Fran Alford, Dot Sims, Becky Wilkes, June Ducote, Muriel Middleton, Juanita Curtis and Kathy O’Masta. The leader and instructor is Elaine McCloud.

The Luverne High School Class of 1947 “Lunch Bunch” met at Meadowcrest Community Room September 11th, for their every second Thursday of the month luncheon. A salad lunch was served at noon. The classmates brought a variety of delicious salads which were enjoyed by everyone.

Plans were made for a brown bag lunch to be held Thursday, October 9th, at 11 a.m.

Members attending were Voncile Nichols, Margaret Nichols, Mattie Lula Jeffcoat, Louise Morgan, Edna Norsworthy, Adine Moseley, Susan Borom and Alice Curtis.

A program to honor the memory of 9/11 victims at the World Trade Center was the focus for the second Thursday night Grateful Hearts’ covered dish supper at South Luverne Baptist Church September 11, 2008.

The group also honored our military forces, those now serving and those who have served their country. The group was blessed when six Luverne High School Band students opened the meeting with several patriotic tunes.

Pastor Mike Green opened the meeting with prayer and gave the blessing on the meal. After the food and fellowship, there was a time of sharing by those present about loved ones or themselves who had served in different wars and different branches of the military.

Rev. Don Yancy gave a great devotional that paid tribute to God and how our relationship with God helps us have strength through times of war and trouble. In closing, Guy Bruce led the group in singing “God Bless America.” John Ganey dismissed in prayer, and prayed for our military and offered a prayer of thanksgiving for our freedom.

The fellowship hall was beautifully decorated by Glenda Yancy using a patriotic theme with lots of flags.

Luverne United Methodist Church is sponsoring 5th Quarter on 5th Street where students can hang out after home football games. There will be pizza, Pepsi and ping pong every time. There will be raffle give-aways for chances to win some really cool prizes. This is held in the old Lawhon’s Restaurant building from 9:00 p.m. to midnight.

Kristin White Sims was selected as “Teacher of The Year” this week for Legacy Elementary School of Madison, Alabama. Kristin teaches a preschool class at Legacy Elementary that blends special needs preschool children and their typical peers. This is her second year at Legacy Elementary and her fifth year to work in the field of education. She will compete for Madison County Elementary Teacher of the Year later this year.

Kristin is a 1999 honor graduate of Luverne High School, and a 2003 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Auburn University, with a B. S. degree in Early Childhood Special Education. She received her Master’s Degree in this same field in 2005 from Auburn University. Kristin is married to Joshua Sims of Madison, who is employed with Westar Engineering of Huntsville. Kristin’s parents are Jerry and Gayle White of Luverne.

Tickets are being sold on a quilt to be given away October 11, 2008, by the Spring Hill South Cemetery, Inc. The quilt is an 8-point star pattern, multi-colored, for a full-size bed. The quilt was furnished and quilted by Willie Pearl Carnes.
