CCA head coach Roland Jones’ Cougars rolled up 358 rushing yards on 39 attempts, averaging 9.3 yards per carry, in a 34-9 pounding of the Ashford Academy Falcons last Friday night. The Ashford Falcons, who came into the game 2-0 and were previously unscored upon, could not stop CCA’s phenomenal duo of Jake Page, who rushed for 180 yards and 2 TDs on 18 carries, and Nick Kilpatrick, who accounted for 149 yards on 12 carries and 1 TD.

Ashford received the ball first, but early in the 1st quarter, sophomore Kyle Furr recovered a fumble at the Ashford 28 yard line to give CCA an early break. The Cougars wasted little time, pounding the ball inside to the one yard line. With 4:43 remaining in the 1st, Jake Page plunged in from 1 yard out for the game’s first TD. After Michael Jackson’s successful PAT, the score was 7-0 CCA.

CCA regained possession late in the 1st quarter by stopping the Falcons on downs at the CCA 46 yard line. Four plays later, CCA’s Nick Kilpatrick scored a 9-yard TD run on the first play of the 2nd quarter. The PAT was unsuccessful and with 11:52 left in the 2nd, CCA led 13-0.

CCA’s defense forced the Falcons to punt after 3 plays on their next possession, giving the Cougars the ball back on their own 22 yard line. On the third play of CCA’s drive, senior Jake Page once again gashed an opposing defense, ripping Ashford for a 58-yard TD run with 8:43 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Another PAT was unsuccessful, and CCA led 19-0.

Ashford, aided by a long kickoff return and a few successful running plays, got within striking distance, but CCA’s defense hardened and did not allow the Falcons to score a TD. Ashford had to settle for a field goal, and with 4:32 left in the 2nd quarter, CCA led 19-3. CCA and Ashford swapped punts and the 1st half ended in the same score.

The 3rd quarter started with a bang when Junior Nick Kilpatrick ran 42 yards on CCA’s first drive to set up Senior Corey Green’s 1 yard TD plunge with 10:27 remaining in the 3rd. Green then hit senior Davis Layton in the end-zone for the 2 point conversion, and CCA led 27-3.

Later in the 3rd, CCA’s Justin Thrash tallied CCA’s final points, scoring on a 14 yard run with 2:26 remaining in the quarter. Jackson got back on track and nailed the PAT, giving CCA a 34-3 lead and all but breaking the Ashford Falcon’s back. Ashford managed another score on a 59 yard TD run by Kevin Gray with 1:58 remaining in the 3rd, but Junior James Lester blocked the PAT to steal any momentum that the Falcon’s may have mustered. After the blocked PAT, CCA led 34-9.

CCA’s Defense finished the game out, not allowing any more points. Sophomore Marino Bolling intercepted a pass late in the 4th quarter to ice the game, and CCA walked away with its 3rd area win in 3 weeks. Cody Moses accounted for 11 tackles, and Zach Bell chipped in 9 tackles to lead the CCA defense. CCA is still undefeated in area play and will take a week off next week as next Friday night is a bye. The following week CCA will host the Ward Military Academy Fighting Rangers for yet another area game. Ward is currently 1-3 and will host Abbeville tomorrow night.

Kickoff on October 3rd at CCA is set for 7:00 p.m.
