LBWCC Camellia City Classic ‘a success’

The Lurleen B. Wallace Community College Camellia City Classic held its third annual tournament Wednesday, and the tournament grew for the third straight year.

“We had a great, and successful tournament,” said Arlene Davis, who served as the main coordinator for the tournament.

Davis said players came from as far away as Illinois and Canada to participate in the tournament.

There was also a special guest taking part: Lieutenant Governor Jim Folsom, Jr. played a round.

“Lt. Gov. Folsom had never played this course before,” Davis said. “He’s a man of few words, but two things he said were how impressed he was with the city of Greenville and with Cambrian Ridge.”

Some 72 golfers played in the tournament, which is up from the 58 that participated last year.

Last year’s tournament raised over $25,000, and campus director Jim Krudop said that number should be higher this year, though he doesn’t have a final tally yet.

“It was a tremendous success,” he said. “It’s great public relations for the college and city, and everyone was so excited to be here.”

The money will be used for scholarships at LBWCC.

“This is a significant amount of money for our scholarships,” Krudop said. “What’s good for the school is good for the city, and what’s good for the city is good for the school.”

“This is the Camellia City Classic, so it really is a joint effort,” he added.

Krudop said the staff tried a few different things this year, including adding a bit more money for prizes and a steak dinner at the end of the day.

Krudop also wanted to thank Davis for her work in coordinating the tournament and all the sponsors who participated and sponsored holes and teams.
