12 members and two guests were present for the first meeting of the new club year for the Georgiana Garden Club September 4.

.Hostesses Sandra Jones and Suzy Shepherd had beautifully decorated the log cabin with a huge arrangement of fall flowers centered on the dining table as the focal point.

Various fall flowers were selected as well as the containers for members to arrange and take to the Georgiana Nursing Home.

Roll call was answered with the favorite flower in their garden.

Shepherd opened the meeting with a warm welcome to the guests, Ellen Bush and the Rev. Alice Sawyer, followed by a devotional.

Frances Garner read the minutes from the last meeting, which were approved. Treasurer Joan Andrews brought the club members up to date on finances and cookbook sales.

A discussion of the need to replace the club’s refrigerator was tabled until the next meeting.

The president went over plans for the coming year and handed out the new yearbooks.

Patsy Riley, Alabama’s First Lady, has requested the state’s garden clubs send any variety of bulbs to further beautify the gardens at the Governor’s Mansion.

Doris McInvale was put in charge of this project. Club members were also encouraged to compile a book of evidence of all club activities and to try to increase membership.

Bush, who wished to become a member, was voted into the club while Sawyer was inducted as an honorary member.

The District VI meeting was discussed and will be on October 29 at the Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery.

Members were asked to bring Alabama and Auburn tags to the meeting to be used as birdhouse roofs to be sold by the Ways and Means Committee.

Members worked on the Garden Therapy Project for September by arranging the fall flowers in colorful containers to be delivered to the nursing home.

Next month, the club will tour the Brantley garden of Mrs. Calvin Bodiford and see her propagated Confederate Rose, named “Alma’s Star” in her honor.

Alma’s Star has gained national attention and is currently on sale at Southern Homes and Gardens.

Following the drawing of door prizes won by Minnie Ledbetter and Carolyn Thompson, the club was adjourned.
