It will be a busy weekend for a pair of VIPs visiting the Camellia City.

The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey and his wife, Lady Carey, will be involved in a mixture of social and church events during their brief stay in Greenville.

Father Fred Lindstrom said on Thursday he was very pleased to see it appeared the weather would cooperate for their visit.

“It’s cold and rainy (in England), but I warned them we’d have warm weather here,” Lindstrom said.

The Episcopalian Church Women (ECW) of Saint Thomas Episcopal Church will host a tea in Lady Carey’s honor on Saturday afternoon, September 13 at Rosa McGowin’s home in Chapman.

Lord Carey will join the gentlemen for an evening at Conservation Lake.

A forum with the Careys will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the parish hall.

The former head of the Church of England will then preside over the Holy Eucharist with assistance from Father Fred at 10:30 a.m.

Lord Carey will also preach at Evensong at 4 p.m. Sunday, with a full complement of singers and musicians led by Charles Kennedy providing special music for the event.

On Monday, September 15, the public is invited to a book signing of Lord Carey’s memoir “Know the Truth” and discussion in the parish hall at noon.

Saint Thomas parishioner Judy Messina, who has read his memoir, said she is looking forward to the Careys’ visit and a chance to hear more about the couple’s experiences.

“I really enjoyed Lord Carey’s book, especially learning about his early life and about his interaction with the Royal family. It is very interesting.”

Additional copies of the memoirs can be found at the parish bookstore and will be available for purchase at the book signing.
