On the final stat sheet, the Fort Dale Eagles dominated the Glenwood Gators.

However, it didn’t look that way on the scoreboard as the Eagles game away with a 21-19 win.

“We did a pretty good job of dominating the game, but we let them make a game of it,” said head coach James Sampley. “You just can’t do that. There ain’t but one stat that matters and that’s the score.”

The Eagles had 251 yards rushing and 63 yards passing, compared to 83 yards rushing and 72 yards passing for Glenwood.

Glenwood got on the scoreboard on the first play of the game by taking the kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

FDA responded with an eight-play, 68-yard drive capped by a two-yard run from Jeffery Stead and an extra point from Sean McKeague, who kicked all three of Fort Dale’s extra points.

Later, a high snap on a Fort Dale punt gave Glenwood the ball on the Eagles’ 20-yard line.

One play later and the Gators were in the endzone.

Before halftime, Hunter Armstrong hit Todd Burkett on a 22-yard pass to put the Eagles ahead 14-13 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Stead added an eight-yard run to make it 21-13.

The Gators scored as the third quarter was winding down, but they went for two and didn’t convert to make the final score 21-19.

Daniel Nolan led the rushing attack with 18 rushes for 113 yards, and Stead was close behind with 19 rushes for 107 yards.

Armstrong was 3-5 passing and all three completions went to Burkett.

Matt Causey, Kendall Gibson and Daniel Lowe all had seven tackles to lead the defense.

“This was a good win and a region game, but we’re going to get better before next week,” Sampley said. “We’ve got to get everyone healthy, too.”

Next week, the Eagles get a visit from Pike Liberal Arts School.
