Greenville City Clerk Sue Arnold called Tuesday’s municipal election one of the “smoothest” ever.

“It really went well,” she said. “No problems to report.”

Arnold applauded the work of the poll workers at each of the five polling places for their assistance. Workers were at the polls at 6 a.m. and stayed until 8 p.m. in most cases.

“That’s a lot to do for $100 and a club sandwich,” Arnold joked. Poll workers are paid a $100 stipend and lunch from the city for volunteering their services during municipal elections. “But I couldn’t have asked for a better job. They worked together very professionally and handled everything in a professional manner. And they did it with a smile.”

Arnold said election results will be certified on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Greenville City Hall.

Incumbent Mayor Dexter McLendon won re-election by defeating local businessman Gerald Johnson.

On Tuesday night, Johnson said he had questions that needed to be answered regarding the election results, which gave McLendon a 1015-664 victory.

Reached on Friday, Johnson said those questions had been answered to his satisfaction.

In south Butler County, there are still two council races left to decide in Georgiana. Denson Scott and Clementine Pugh will face each other in District 4, and Dewey Eady and Brandi Scruggs square off in District 1.

Run-off elections will be held Oct. 7.
