Janet Caroline Heilmann Meador, 77, died on July 6, 2008, in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a long illness. She was the wife of Daniel John Meador, a retired University of Virginia law professor and former dean of the University of Alabama Law School.

Mrs. Meador was born on January 21, 1931, in Washington, D. C. and grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She received the B.A. degree from Mary Washington College, after which she pursued graduate study in psychology at the George Washington University.

After her marriage in 1955, she moved with her husband to Birmingham where she was employed first on the editorial staff of the Southern Medical Journal and then by the Birmingham Public School System.

She administered tests to students with learning difficulties.

In 1957 she and her husband moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, when he accepted an appointment on the University of Virginia law faculty.

In 1966, they moved to Tuscaloosa, where he assumed the deanship of the University of Alabama Law School. There she was active in the Junior League, the First Presbyterian Church, and the life of the law school.

In 1970 she and her husband and family returned to Charlottesville when he rejoined the University of Virginia law faculty.

Known as Jan, she was an active member of the Junior League, the Rivanna Garden Club, and the University of Virginia Faculty Wives Club, serving as president in 1974-75.

From 1972 to 1975 she was a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Anne’s-Belfield School.

She was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville.

An enthusiastic tennis player, she was for many years a member of the Farmington Country Club. She traveled extensively with her husband.

For a year in 1965-66 they lived in England. They were in East Germany for three months in 1983. During 1977-79 she and their family lived in McLean, Virginia, while Professor Meador was with the U. S. Department of Justice.

In addition to her husband of 52 years, she is survived by three children: Barrie Meador Boyd and her husband, Robert D. Boyd, of Atlanta, Anna Meador Palms and her husband, John M. Palms Jr., of Dallas, Daniel J. Meador Jr. and his wife, Mary Lewis Bowen Meador, of Charlottesville. Also seven grandchildren; two sisters, Marjory Bundock of St. Michaels, Maryland, and Nancy Kurz and her husband, Ronald Kurz, of Winnetka, Illinois; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Clifton K. Meador of Nashville, former dean of the University of Alabama Medical School.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, July 10, 2008 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Greenville, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cahaba Foundation, Inc., 707 Selma Avenue, Selma, Alabama 36701, or to the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Street, Charlottesville, Virginia 22902.
